Tenet on the Aluminum Tubes

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/30/2007

Quotable:

CIA analysts believed that these tubes were intended for the enrichment of uranium. Others thought they were intended to make rockets. To test the theory, CIA brought together a “red team” of highly experienced experts from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory—people who had actually built centrifuges. Their assessment was that the tubes were more suited for nuclear use than for anything else. The Department of Energy’s representative at the NFIB delivered his agency’s assessment that the tubes were probably not part of a nuclear program. He was not a technical expert, however, and, despite being given several opportunities, he was unable to explain the basis of his department’s view in anything approaching a convincing manner.

Friedman’s TV Guy Has A New One

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/30/2007

Bob Chitester on his new television production “The Ultimate Resource”. Quotable:

Q: Why did you start Free to Choose Media?

A: It isn’t so much that I started a production house as that I had the good fortune of meeting Milton Friedman and persuading him to undertake, with me, the creation of what became “Free to Choose,” the PBS series that went on the air in 1980. Many people think that the TV series was based on the book; that was not the case. The book would not have existed had we not created the television series. Literally from that point on I have been engaged in any and every activity that I was capable of conceiving of and finding the resources for to advance the ideas that Milton presented in that TV series and book.

Bush All Wrong On Immigration — Again

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/24/2007

You shouldn’t believe anything George Bush says on immigration — it’s another case where he’s either very dishonest or very poorly informed. Remember all of Bush’s BS about family values not stopping at the border? Well the illegitimacy rate in the immigrant population is at crisis proportions. Among other findings from the Center for Immigration Studies:

Illegitimacy also can be measured by the share of unmarried women who give birth. One out of every 12 unmarried immigrant women had a baby in 2003; for natives it was one out of 25. For Hispanic immigrants it was one in seven.

And this:

There is no evidence that illegitimacy is related to legal status. Illegitimacy is common in many immigrant-sending counties. According to the UN, in Mexico and Canada the illegitimacy rate is 38 percent; in El Salvador it’s 73 percent; and it’s 86 percent in Jamaica.

And this:

The illegitimate children of immigrants also often have to overcome their parents’ low education levels. In 2003, 56 percent of illegitimate births to immigrants were to mothers without a high school diploma; for natives the rate was 33 percent. It was 65 percent for Hispanic immigrants.

It’s the Culture Stupid

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/24/2007

75% of Americans believe the culture and bad parenting are to blame for mass murder on campus — but that’s not what ABC News told it’s viewers. And it’s one more reason I don’t watch the ABC News network.

Bush’s One Man Think Tank Resigns

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/23/2007

Peter Wehner calls it quits after six years on the White House staff. Quotable:

This career path belies the adage that good performers advance in organizations until they find their level of incompetence. Wehner, a close associate of Bill Bennett, is a true public intellectual, and the “think tank” position was perfect for him.

Learning Alienation & Hostility From the Faculty At Virginia Tech

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/21/2007

Quotable:

I wonder — was Cho taught to hate? Whatever he learned in his classes — did it enable him to rage at his host country, to hate the students he envied so murderously? .. Or to ask the question differently — was Cho ever taught to respect others, to admire the good things about his host country, and to discipline himself to build a positive life?

And that answer is readily available on the websites of Cho’s English Department at Virginia Tech. This is a wonder world of PC weirdness. English studies at VT are a post-modern Disney World in which nihilism, moral and sexual boundary breaking, and fantasies of Marxist revolutionary violence are celebrated. They show up in a lot of faculty writing. Not by all the faculty, but probably by more than half.

Just check out their websites.

I wonder if Cho took the senior seminar by Professor Knapp, on “The self-justifying criminal in literature.” .. And then there is the big Marxist website from Professor Brizee, all in fiery red against pitch black, showing old, mass-murder-inspiring Karl flanked by two raised fists. It celebrates revolutionary violence and hate for capitalist America (which is paying for Cho’s education). “Critical Social Theory” — the euphemism for PoMo (Post Modern) Marxism — is a big part of English teaching at VT. The Marxist page links prominently to the British Socialist Worker’s Party, which is currently leading the charge for Islamic fascism through such creatures as George Galloway ..

I’m sorry but VT English doesn’t look like a place that gives lost and angry adolescents the essential boundaries for civilized behavior. In fact, in this perversely disorienting PoMo world, the very words “civilized behavior” are ridiculed — at least until somebody starts to shoot students, and then it’s too late. A young culture-shocked adolescent can expect no firm guidance here ..

World Bank Mind Blower

Posted by PrestoPundit on 04/21/2007

Had to read this one twice:

the [World] Bank faces an existential financial problem because of the combined effect of its declining relevance and attractiveness as a funding source for many middle-income countries like China, India, Mexico and Russia, and an annual administrative budget exceeding $1 billion.
